Fleet Bus & Coach got a sneak preview of the new Coach in Mannheim
Having manufactured and sold 26,000 Tourismo Coaches over the last 26 years, Mercedes-Benz decided it was time to bring an all new passenger transporter to the marketplace. With all the genes and traditions of the Tourismo which, according to Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler, has been the backbone of the European coach market for many years.
The new vehicle has a fresh new design and additional safety features. Available in two/three-axle configuration, a new 456hp engine is now also on offer. Based on the very successful and efficient OM470 block, further fuel efficiencies have been achieved.
In an interesting response to the growing numbers traveling by coach in France and Germany and the different type of applications operators and drivers need, two very distinct cockpits or driver areas can be selected by operators. Firstly, with a focus on an Express service where ticketing and cash machines can be accommodated, a functional and robust layout is available. For the more leisurely touring coach application, a softer option is provided, which takes into account the comfort of the guide. The driving area has all the safety features and practicality one would expect from the triple star brand.
Although presented to selected media last week such as the International Bus & Coach Jury, the new Tourismo will be launched at the Busworld Show in Kortrijk (Belgium) later this year. Production will begin in late summer and Irish operators need not worry, the Tourismo will be available in RHD (right hand drive) from the start, certainly in time for 2018 delivery. At the presentation, the Head of Daimler Buses Hartmut Schick said: “The new Tourismo is precisely configured to meet the wishes and requirements of operators, it sets a benchmark for efficiency and safety.”
