Axeon helps Glasgow switch on to electric vehicles

Delivering clean mobile power for electric vehicles, cordless power tools and mobile power applications

A ceremony in Glasgow today saw the city take a major step on the road to becoming a leader in electric vehicle technology – and to achieving an improved environment for its residents.

Ten electric vehicles were handed over today to Glasgow City Council – the first of 40 funded by a grant from the Technology Strategy Board to a consortium led by Glasgow niche vehicle manufacturer Allied Vehicles. The project will support the development and trial of electric cars in the city over the next two years.

Members of the consortium also include Scottish-based Axeon, who has developed the batteries for the electric vehicles, Glasgow City Council, ScottishPower, The University of Strathclyde and Scottish Enterprise. The initial fleet of 10 Peugeot eExperts delivered today will be followed by a further 30 Peugeot ePartners, which are scheduled to be delivered in September 2010 in a programme worth in total £3.8 million. The vehicles will see service in Glasgow City Council’s fleet and will serve a variety of purposes.

Lawrence Berns, CEO of Axeon of Dundee, said: “The accent on this trial is to assess performance in real world conditions on the streets of Glasgow and we are confident that the technology we have developed in conjunction with Allied and our other partners will provide Council drivers with practical day-to-day solutions to a wide range of transport tasks. It is experience such as this that will lead to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, particularly in our major conurbations”.
